The fastest Rugby to London Euston train takes 52 minutes. An annual season is £7,360 on London Northwestern or £10,660 for Avanti, both 57-minute trains.

Rugby to London Euston takes 52 minutes on the fastest trains and just under an hour on most of them. There are no changes and no alternative London terminal worth using: everything runs down the West Coast Main Line into Euston.

The decision that actually costs you money is not which train to catch. It is which ticket. An annual season restricted to London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway services is £7,360. The unrestricted one that also lets you board Avanti West Coast is £10,660. That is a gap of £3,300 a year, and the restricted ticket still gets you 57-minute trains.

Typical journey times

Observed departures from Rugby to London Euston on Tuesday 11 August 2026, from traintimes.org.uk, which runs on National Rail Enquiries data:

Departure Arrival at Euston Journey time
05:52 07:10 1h 18m (first train of the day)
06:33 07:28 55m
07:01 07:57 56m
07:08 08:05 57m (London Northwestern)
09:34 10:27 53m
12:34 13:27 53m
17:52 18:44 52m (fastest observed)
23:48 01:37 1h 49m (last direct train)

Coming the other way, the first arrival into Rugby is 06:37 off the 05:31 from Euston, and the last direct train is the 23:30 from Euston, in at 00:58. Anything later than that involves a change at Northampton and, on the night we checked, a replacement bus.

Two patterns are worth noticing. The fast trains cluster at roughly :34 and :52 past the hour in the middle of the day, and the slower services, the ones taking 1h 25m to 1h 36m, are the London Northwestern stoppers that run round the Northampton loop calling at everything. Both types show as “Rugby to London” on a booking site. Check the journey time before you buy, because the difference is over 40 minutes.

What a season ticket costs

Current prices from Trainline, checked this week. The route restriction printed on the ticket is what separates them:

Annual season ticket prices from Rugby to London, August 2026 Horizontal bars comparing annual season ticket prices from Rugby. London Euston valid on London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway only costs 7,360 pounds. London Victoria or Waterloo via Kensington Olympia costs 8,332 pounds. Travelcard zones 1 to 6 restricted to London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway costs 8,680 pounds. London Terminals by any permitted route, which includes Avanti West Coast, costs 10,660 pounds. Travelcard zones 1 to 6 by any permitted route costs 11,292 pounds. The gap between the cheapest Euston ticket and the unrestricted one is 3,300 pounds a year. The same commute, £3,300 a year apart Adult annual season tickets from Rugby, August 2026. The only difference is which trains the ticket lets you board. Euston London Northwestern / WMR only £7,360 Victoria or Waterloo only via Kensington Olympia £8,332 Travelcard zones 1-6 London Northwestern / WMR only £8,680 London Terminals any permitted route, includes Avanti £10,660 Travelcard zones 1-6 any permitted route £11,292 Bars start at zero. The Travelcard versions add unlimited Tube and bus travel in zones 1 to 6. The Kensington Olympia ticket is only valid if your journey physically routes via Olympia, so it is no use for an Euston commute. The weekly and monthly equivalents follow the same split: £184 a week or £706.60 a month for the London Northwestern ticket to Euston, against £266.50 a week or £1,023.40 a month unrestricted.

Do not buy the Kensington Olympia ticket by mistake. At £8,332 it looks like a middle option, but it is only valid if your journey actually passes through or changes at Kensington Olympia, which no Rugby to Euston service does. It exists for people travelling to Victoria or Waterloo the long way round.

Walk-up fares, and the same trap

Buy on the day and the restriction shows up again. On the departures we checked:

  • Anytime Return, London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway only: £99.20.
  • Anytime Return, any permitted route: £157.00.
  • Off-Peak Return: £43.90 or £58.40, depending on the same restriction.
  • Super Off-Peak Return: £33.50, on the quietest midday and evening trains.
  • Advance singles from £11.00 on off-peak departures, booked ahead.

The 07:08 from Rugby reaches Euston at 08:05, a 57-minute run, and the restricted £99.20 return is valid on it. The 06:56 Avanti service takes exactly the same 57 minutes and needs the £157.00 ticket. If your working pattern lets you flex by twelve minutes, that is £58 a day.

Getting to Coventry, Birmingham and Northampton

Rugby is not only a London station, and for a lot of people here it is not a London station at all. Typical times and walk-up singles on the same day:

Destination Typical time Anytime single Anytime day return
Coventry 10 minutes £8.10 £9.10
Northampton 21 to 23 minutes £11.80 £12.00
Birmingham New Street 38 to 41 minutes £13.10 £15.00

Ten minutes to Coventry for £9.10 return is the most useful line on this page for anyone who works there. Birmingham at under 40 minutes puts a second city centre in range without touching the M6.

The station itself

Rugby station is managed by Avanti West Coast, and National Rail lists:

  • 701 car parking spaces, of which 15 are accessible bays.
  • Ticket office open 05:45 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday, and 08:10 to 19:50 on Sundays.
  • Bicycle storage on site, and bicycle hire.

If the station car park does not suit, the council’s John Barford car park is a few minutes’ walk away off James Street and Railway Terrace, has 411 spaces and costs £5 for up to 11 hours. The full list of town car parks and what each charges is on our Rugby roadworks and travel page.

Rugby Parkway: a second station, not yet

There is a plan for a second station in the borough. Rugby Parkway would sit on the Northampton loop beside the A428 Crick Road, south east of the town, serving the new housing on that side. The council’s submitted Local Plan safeguards the land for it under Policy I5 and says the proposals are “more advanced” than the parallel Nuneaton Parkway scheme, “with a planning application having been submitted”.

What it does not have is a confirmed opening date. Warwickshire County Council, which is promoting the scheme, has been testing the market for finance rather than announcing a start. Treat any date you see quoted for it as provisional until the county council confirms funding. Until then, Rugby has one station.

Where these numbers come from

Fares change every March, and timetables change in May and December. If you are about to commit to a season ticket, check the current price before you buy. What matters most is not this year’s number but the restriction printed next to it.
